In many industrial and operational related businesses, the production process is governed by an internal network. This network is usually not connected to any other network, and specifically, not connected to the Internet. This is either due to regulatory requirements or policy directives, or just plain “common sense”. The need for such segregation is due to the sensitivity of the production or operations network. Disruption of the normal operational mode will cause extensive damage, both financial and reputational related, and in some cases – even worse. A required feature of production and operational systems is to be able to inform, in real-time, about the production status, plant information, ERP/Billing Data, alerts and alarms, etc… This ability is unavailable (at least – not real-time and not online) for these segregated systems.
Implementing Waterfall®, as the gateway to the Internet (or other external networks) enables the organization to provide online information about the production status, order information and more, online, to external systems outside of the network, directly to customers or to a website for online enquires.
