Modbus

The WF-SME for Modbus enables secure, unidirectional, real time, and foolproof transfer of Modbus data from Industrial networks to Business networks.

The Modbus over TCP/IP Protocol is used to deliver control and monitoring information over a SCADA network. The Modbus is a single layer protocol used directly over the TCP/IP sockets.

Modbus uses TCP/IP as the physical layer used for the data transfer.   The Modbus Application Protocol Specification V1.1b document defines that some of the protocol messages used on serial lines are not used over TCP/IP. The Modbus protocol is bidirectional protocol.  It enables writing commands to the controlled equipment and reading responses. In addition, the protocol enables file related operations (read and write).

Waterfall SCADA Monitoring Enabler for Modbus solution topology solution is described in the following drawing:

Modbus2

The WF Modbus agent connected to a Modbus network act as a Modbus entitiy – a Modbus Master or Modbus Slave.

  • The WF Modbus Master station sends monitoring commands and information request to the Modbus Slave equipment.
  • The received data is collected in a Database.
  • The WF Modbus Slave sends responses to the request messages received from the Modbus Master station according to the information collected in the Database.
